New Live Update Lands Tomorrow.

You may have been hearing about the latest Xbox Live update, and if you have not you should know that you will seeing it tomorrow. There are a lot of new things that you will see, and we have done our best to let you know what they will be.

The first thing you may notice is the new Xbox Originals service. This will allow you to download original Xbox titles like Halo, Fable, and Psychonauts for 1200 points each. The one thing they will not have is achievements, and they will still have all the same emulation problems as before. The one thing it will allow you to do is stop searching high and low for a copy at your local game store and pawn shop.

You will also see they are lowing the price on some of the Live Arcade Hits. Bankshot Billiards 2 and Lumines Live have been marked down to 800 points each, or for 400 points you can get Zuma, Marble Blast Ultra, or Small Arms.

There is also some new social networking features like being able to see your friends' Friends Lists, and the ability to expand your gamer bio, providing more detailed information about yourself to the Xbox Live community.

For those of you family types the addition of the Family Timer will allow time limits to be placed on the 360. Movie previews are also supposed to get a face lift by letting you see them full-screen. The update will also comes include "enhanced video codec support." What this means is that you will be able to play your DivX and Xvid files on your 360. You can get more info on the video support by clicking here

Finally the dashboard tweaks will make way for a new news feed service called Inside Xbox which will launch on the 11th. It is designed to keep you up to date on 360 news like game releases, events, and Marketplace offers.

EA acquires BioWare/Pandemic for $860 Million

According to news on the next EA has gotten their dirty little hands on BioWare/Pandemic. This follows recent speculation of the purchase from serveral new sources. According to an articles at TheStreet.com and Kotaku EA made this move to position themselves better in the online role-playing market because of BioWare's early development of a MMO in its Austin, Texas, studio.

EA is hoping the game will give the company the edge against popular online games such as World of Warcraft and science fiction game, Tabula Rasa, that have become a phenomenon among gamers.

At this time BioWare and Pandemic Studios have 10 franchises under development, including six that are entirely owned by them according to EA.

BioWare is also currently developing a game Mass Effect, which will be published by Microsoft, in November.

The whole transaction is scheduled to close on January 2008.

FASA Studio, Closing up shop...

Well it wasn't like there was much left of FASA after they closed up most of everything else in 2001, but it seems that after the recent release of Shadowrun for the 360, what remained of FASA has closed it's doors.

While Shadowrun fell short of being a great game, it's still a shame, I am going to miss Earthdawn, Crimson Skies, ! It's always a shame to see a classic RPG company disband.

It has been confirmed!

We speculated about it, everyone else expected it, and it has finally been confirmed: Blizzard announced it has started work on StarCraft 2!

During its Worldwide Invitational in Seoul, Korea, Blizzard announced the development of StarCraft 2, the long-awaited sequel of one of the most popular real-time strategy games of all time.

It was believed that a new title would be announced during the event, and industry speculation ranged from an MMORPG based on the StarCraft universe to a porting of the World of Warcraft series to next-gen consoles. Neither turned out to be the case however as Blizzard announced the return of the StarCraft series.

During their announcement, Blizzard launched the official StarCraft 2 website (located at www.starcraft2.com), which currently only carries limited information about to the game, but has specific details regarding some of the new units and structures that will be available to Protoss forces. With the return of the zealots, the site has announced some new units including the Immortals (upgraded Dragoon units), Stalkers (the Dark Templar equivalent of Dragoons), and Phase Prisms. Resembling upgraded Arbiters, these new Phase Prisms serve two purposes. The first is the ability to instantaneously teleport Protoss units when used in conjunction with a Warp Gate. The second is to act as a temporary power source to surrounding Protoss structures in the absence of a Pylon or Nexus.

Keep an eye on the site as Blizzard plans to update it in the near future to report on the changes being made to both the Terran and Zerg races. There has also been rumors that a fourth race, based on an amalgamation of both Terran and Zerg, would be introduced to the game though nothing has been revealed at this point. Because the game is in it's early stage of development, Blizzard is remaining tight-lipped about several of the other game's details, including release date, system requirements, and the even the possibility of a beta test. The company has confirmed that, while the Battle.net service will be updated to accommodate this new game, servers for the original StarCraft will not be affected.

KOTOR becomming a MMORPG?

According to EGM reports it seems that BioWare has formed a new online team to make a Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic massively multiplayer online game (MMORPG).

No further details were reported in the rumor section of the magazine however. KOTOR is one of the best Star Wars games ever and the thoughts that it could be turned into an MMO is exciting news indeed.

If these rumors turn out to be true, then this would be the second MMO based in the Star Wars Universe, the first being Star Wars Galaxies by Sony Online which was launched in 2003.

It appears that the site is getting more and more traffic. This is exciting news because ever since we lost our database due to a server move and a change to the management system a few years ago and have not fully recovered. I feel that it is a shame because there were some really great people that we lost contact with, but during my recent move I think I may have found a very old back up of the original database and will try to get the old site working and see about contacting our old members. Lets hope those email address are good and get ready to welcome some people back!

Feburary Update

Today being the last day in February I thought that it would take a few moments and give you an update on how things where going. The image gallery is now working and accessible to all registered members, and it even includes a public area where you can upload and share your own images. The only catch is there is a 50kb quota limit, but you will be able to increase that sometime in March. Huzzah!

The reviews are underway. At this time we are still finalizing a few, and they are coming along nicely. I would expect you to see them to be posted soon.

Ogre and I are still working on the new How-To section. The big hold up has been correctly photographing the miniature as they go though the different phases of painting. I even plan on joining in and following along to also give the photos of a novices first 'real' time.

Finally; we still need your gaming quotes! We have gotten several, but it is still not enough! Register and please click here to share them. The only real limitations are they must be gaming related and must be fairly short.

Pressing forward

Before I get started, I need to say one thing:We want your quotes! The only real limitations are they must be gaming related and must be fairly short. Things like "Can someone fix my butt flap!" and "I'm comin' Tater!" would be very acceptable. Please remember to include the name and level of the character that said it (or even the players name) so we can give them credit. Once we get enough there will be a spot on the site to show them. To share your quotes please click here to post them (You must be registered and logged in to post).

On to other things, as you may have seen things have changed around here! Nothing really major just a visual overhaul. Hope ya like it.

In other site news, the staff and I have been talking and we are working hard to come up with new content for you to sink your fangs into. Some of the things that we have in store for you; reviews on all kinds of things from books, to games and even the occasional hardware review for you PC gamers. There was even they idea thrown out about our own Ogre doing a how-to on painting Miniatures over several weeks (He painted the miniature featured on the top of the site). There is even an image gallery lined up so we can share photos.
2007 is looking like it will be an exciting year, so grab your friends and drag them on board!

October Update

Happy October! October is the time of the year that normally means I get the urge to make changes to GamersNorth, but this year is a little different. I have decided not to make major site changes because I am happy with way the code is working, the speed of the site, and the over all layout of the content. For those of you that don't know me this is a day of firsts, because I can hardly go very long with making changes to anything at all much less makeup my mind, so today is a special day.

On a side note though, that does NOT mean they look of the site will stay the same. I have been kinda unhappy with the graphical look of the site and have been looking for a new theme. To get this taken care of for the second time in GN history I am looking to contract with someone to get new theme designed for the site. You all may remember the last one before the major code revision. It looked nice and acted the way I wanted, but may have been to much for dialup users and for that reason it was not carried over.
